This 2003 Dell Inspiron 2650 is turning out to be quite complete, and a bit of a beast. It's got 256MB of RAM in the user-accessible slot. There's another soldered RAM slot. I'll have to open the machine to access that. I've removed the IDE disk and successfully scraped the contents into an image file using my friend ddrescue.

@fluidlogic I'd had two failed attempts to scrape the bits off the disk, using the default ddrescue parameters I typically use:
sudo ddrescue --ask --force /dev/sdb ~/Downloads/"Dell 2650 Hitachi Travelstar IDE.img"
...but these parameters worked:
sudo ddrescue --ask --force --idirect --data-preview=6 --reverse -vv /dev/sdb ~/Downloads/"Dell 2650 Hitachi Travelstar IDE [attempt 3].img"
